Can you make a key for a Ram 1500 where the truck is parked?

Yes. A Ram pickup's key is programmed through the same Sentry Key immobilizer used across the Chrysler group, and a licensed locksmith does it at the truck — in a driveway, in a company yard or on a jobsite — by obtaining the vehicle's PIN through proper channels once ownership is proven. Which key you need depends on the year. Rams from roughly 2009 to 2012 use a fobik that pushes into the dash; from about 2013 the trucks moved to push-button start with a proximity fob on most trims, and the current-generation 1500 is proximity throughout, while the Classic kept the older cab and its hardware for several years alongside it. Heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 trucks follow a similar path a few years behind. The ProMaster vans are the exception: they are built on a Fiat platform with a different immobilizer, so tell us if the vehicle is a ProMaster and we confirm before dispatching.

Work trucks: fleets, crews and the lost key on site

A Ram is often somebody's workplace. The common calls are a key lost on a jobsite with the truck full of tools, a crew that needs a second and third key for the same vehicle, and a small fleet where every truck should have a spare kept in the office. All of that is routine: additional keys for a truck that still has a working one are the quick version of the job, and several trucks can be done in one visit. Ownership is checked against the registration whoever is standing next to the truck, and for a company vehicle that means the business, not the driver.

ProMaster and ProMaster City

The ProMaster is a Fiat Ducato underneath and the ProMaster City a Fiat Doblo, and their keys follow Fiat's immobilizer rather than the pickups' Sentry Key. Some are serviceable in the aftermarket and some model years are not, and we would rather confirm which on the phone than discover it in your yard. Give us the year and the model and we check what is possible for that van before anyone drives out; if it is a dealer-only case, you hear that on the call.

Ram Key Questions

Does a Ram tailgate need its own key?

No. On Rams with a lockable tailgate, the tailgate lock is keyed to the same key as the doors, and on trucks with power locking it answers the same fob as everything else. What catches people is the opposite problem: a tailgate that has been locked with a key that is now lost. The tailgate cylinder is part of the truck's lock set, so when we make a new key for the doors and ignition it operates the tailgate as well, and if the tailgate cylinder has been damaged by someone forcing it, that is a lock repair at the same visit. For a truck used for work, it is worth asking for the spare key to be cut and programmed on the same visit; a second key for a vehicle that already has one is the quick version of the job.

My Ram has a key that turns in the ignition, not a button. Is that a chip key?

Yes. Every Ram pickup built this century checks a transponder in the key head every time the engine starts, whether the key turns in a cylinder or pushes into the dash as a fobik. A plain metal copy from a hardware store will open the doors and turn the ignition, and the engine will crank and not run — that is the immobilizer working as designed. A replacement key has to be cut to the truck and then programmed to its Sentry Key module, which needs the vehicle's PIN, obtained through proper channels after ownership is confirmed. If you still have one working key, the new one is added alongside it in a few minutes. If you have none, the key is generated from the truck instead, which takes longer but is still done where the truck is.

Can you come to a jobsite or a company yard rather than my house?

Yes, as long as the truck is somewhere a service van can reach and someone with authority over the vehicle is there to meet the technician. For a company truck that means a manager, the owner or whoever the business names, with the registration or an insurance card for the vehicle; the driver's own licence is not proof that the truck is theirs to have a key made for, and we would decline that for your own protection. Tell us when you call if the site has gate access, restricted hours or a check-in, so the technician is not kept waiting at a fence. If several trucks need keys, say so too — one visit for the fleet is cheaper than one per truck.
