Can a locksmith make an Acura key, or does it have to be the dealer?
A locksmith handles most Acuras, and the car stays where it is. Acura is Honda's luxury division and shares its immobilizer engineering, so the generations line up: older TL, TSX and MDX models take a transponder key that is cut and then paired to the car, while from roughly 2013 the range moves to Keyless Access — a proximity smart key you leave in your pocket. Both are routine. What separates Acura from a plain Honda is trim rather than security: the same platform, usually with the smart key fitted as standard where the Honda had it as an option. Tell us the year, the model and whether you turn a key or press a button, and you get a firm price on the phone. Bring photo ID and the registration, title or an insurance card; we confirm the car is yours before programming anything to it.

Which Acura you have matters more than the badge
The useful split is the start button. An Acura you start by turning a key takes a transponder key, and the job is a cut blade plus pairing. An Acura with Keyless Access takes a proximity fob, which needs different equipment and more time. TSX, older TL and early MDX sit on the first side; TLX, RDX and later MDX and ILX sit on the second. Say which one you have when you call and the quote will be right the first time.
Lost every Acura key
Still a roadside job on most models. With nothing to copy, the key is generated from the vehicle and taught to the immobilizer rather than cloned from one you hold, which takes longer than adding a spare. On Honda and Acura platforms that generally depends on a security code tied to your specific car, which a licensed locksmith obtains through proper channels — and the gate on it is proof the car is yours. No tow, and no wait for a dealer appointment.
The emergency blade nobody notices
Every Acura smart key hides a mechanical blade inside the body, released by a small catch. It opens the driver's door when the fob battery dies or the car's battery is flat, which is the single most common reason an Acura owner thinks the key has failed. Before assuming the worst, try a fresh coin cell — a fob that only works pressed against the door handle is almost always a dying battery rather than a dead fob.
Acura Key Questions
Is an Acura key more expensive than a Honda key?
Usually, and the reason is what is fitted rather than the badge on the wheel. Acura put proximity smart keys across the range earlier and more widely than Honda did, so where a same-year Civic might take a remote head key, the TLX beside it takes a Keyless Access fob — and a proximity fob costs more as a part and takes longer to pair. Where the two cars carry the same type of key, the price is much the same. The other thing that moves it is how many keys you still have: adding a spare to a car with a working key is the cheapest version of this job, and generating one when every key is gone is the most expensive. Give us the year, model and how many keys exist, and the figure you hear on the phone is the figure you pay.
The case on my Acura fob is cracked. Do I need a whole new key?
Usually not. Most of what you paid for lives on a small circuit board inside, and on many Acura fobs that board lifts out and drops into a fresh shell in a few minutes, taking the buttons, the chip and the emergency blade with it. The car never knows anything changed, so there is nothing to reprogram and the price is a fraction of a new key. Two things stop it. If the shell is not an exact match for your generation the board will not seat properly, and the buttons will feel wrong or stop responding within weeks — the very cheap shells are cheap for that reason. And if the fob got wet or was driven over, the board itself may be the problem rather than the case, in which case a new shell just houses a dead one. Bring it to us before buying a shell and we will tell you which of the two you have.
My Acura will not start but the lights work. Is that the key?
It might be, and there is a quick way to narrow it down. If the dashboard lights up normally and the engine turns over but will not catch, the immobilizer is a strong candidate — the car is refusing to run because it does not recognise the key. A flashing security light on the cluster points the same way. If instead you hear a single click and everything dims, that is the car's own battery rather than anything to do with the key. A spare key that starts it settles the question immediately. Where the key is the problem, we can usually repair or replace it at the vehicle; where it is the immobilizer's own wiring or a failed reader ring around the ignition, that is a diagnosis we will give you honestly rather than sell you a key you do not need.
