Can a locksmith replace a Dodge key, including a Charger or Challenger fob?
Yes, and for most Dodges it is a routine job. Chargers and Challengers built since about 2011, and Durangos from the same era, use a proximity fob with push-button start; the older ones and the Journey and Grand Caravan use a fobik, the plastic remote that pushes into the dash. Both talk to the same Sentry Key immobilizer that runs across the Chrysler group, and a licensed locksmith adds or generates a key by obtaining the vehicle's PIN through proper channels once ownership is proven. The one Dodge that is different is the Dart: it was built on a Fiat platform with its own immobilizer, so say so when you call and we confirm before dispatching. Two things decide the quote: which key type you have, and whether you still have a working one. A spare is quick; an all-keys-lost Charger means generating the key from the car, which takes longer but is still done at the kerb.

Hellcat and Scat Pack: the red key and the black key
SRT Hellcat Chargers and Challengers ship with two different fobs. The black key starts the car with engine output limited; the red key unlocks the full power. They are programmed to the same immobilizer and both are proximity fobs, but the red one is a specific part, and a replacement has to be the right colour as well as the right frequency. If you have lost the red key and still have the black, tell us — the car starts, which is useful, but you are driving a Hellcat at a fraction of its output until the red key is replaced.
Journey, Grand Caravan and the fobik
The Journey and the Grand Caravan kept the fobik long after the cars moved to proximity fobs — Grand Caravans were still shipping with one in their final years. The fobik has an emergency blade hidden in its body for the doors, and a battery that, when it dies, leaves a van full of children locked in a parking lot. A fobik replacement is a specific blank and a specific programming routine; it is not interchangeable with the push-button fob from a Charger, and a technician who arrives with the wrong one cannot improvise.
Dodge Key Questions
I lost both keys to my Charger. Does the car have to go to a dealer?
No. With no working key, the replacement is generated from the vehicle rather than copied, which is the longer of the two jobs but is done where the car is parked. The fob is cut on the emergency blade if the model has one, then taught to the Sentry Key module using the PIN tied to your car, which a licensed locksmith obtains through proper channels. The gate on that is ownership: photo ID plus the registration, title or an insurance card, and those can be inside the car — we check once it is open. What makes a Charger faster or slower is the year and trim, because the fob changed with the push-button-start models and again on the SRT cars. Give us the year and whether it has a key slot or a start button, and the quote reflects your car rather than an average one.
My Durango's fob only works when I hold it against the start button. Is the fob dead?
Almost always the fob battery, not the fob, and not the car. Chrysler-group vehicles have a fallback for exactly this: when the fob's battery is too weak to be read at a distance, the start button reads it at touching range, so the car still starts. That is the car telling you the battery is low. A new coin cell is the fix, and if the fob case has cracked or a button has stopped clicking, a new shell with the original circuit board moved across keeps the programming intact. Where a locksmith comes in is when the battery has been replaced and the fob still is not seen, or when the circuit board itself has been damaged — then it is a replacement fob programmed to the vehicle, and a spare made at the same time so you are not back here next year.
Is a Dodge Dart key the same job as the other Dodges?
No, and it is the exception worth knowing about. The Dart was built on a platform shared with Fiat and Alfa Romeo, and its immobilizer and key programming follow that platform rather than the Sentry Key system in the Charger, Challenger, Durango and the vans. Some Darts are straightforward and some model years are not, so instead of promising on the phone we ask for the year and trim and confirm what is possible before a technician is dispatched. If a Dart turns out to be a case we cannot reliably do, we say so on that call rather than at your car, and you are not charged for the conversation. Every other Dodge on the road in Charlotte is the ordinary job described on this page.
