Can a locksmith replace an Infiniti key without the dealership?
For most Infinitis, yes, and it is done at your vehicle rather than at a dealer. Infiniti is Nissan's luxury division, so underneath the badge it runs the same anti-theft architecture: the NATS immobilizer, and the proximity fob Nissan calls the Intelligent Key. That is why a blade cut to fit your door will open the car and still not start it — the engine waits for a key the vehicle recognises electronically, and that pairing has to be done to your specific car. One thing worth knowing before you call: Infiniti renamed most of its range, so the G35 and G37 became the Q50 and Q60, the FX became the QX70, the M became the Q70, and the JX became the QX60. Tell us the badge that is actually on the car, and whether you turn a key or press a start button. Those two answers, plus whether you still hold a working key, are what set the quote you get on the phone.
The Nissan system under the Infiniti badge
Infiniti was early to the proximity fob, which is why so many of these cars have a start button and no ignition barrel to put a key into. Practically, that splits the work into two jobs. A traditional chipped blade key, which the earlier G-series cars use, is the quicker one. A proximity Intelligent Key is the longer one, because the fob has to be taught to the car rather than simply cut. Both are routine at the roadside with the right equipment; neither is a job for a key bought online and posted to you, because an unpaired fob is an expensive plastic shell until it is programmed to your vehicle.
Lost every Infiniti key
All keys lost is solvable where the car sits, and it does not need a tow. With nothing to copy, the key is generated from the vehicle itself and then taught to the immobilizer, which takes longer than adding a spare to a key you already hold. Ownership is confirmed before anything is programmed, so have photo ID with the registration, title or an insurance card ready. If you have just bought the car and the title has not caught up yet, say so when you call rather than on the day — we will tell you what we can work with.
Infiniti Key Questions
My Infiniti fob is dead. Am I stranded?
Almost certainly not, and this is worth knowing before it happens rather than after. There is a mechanical emergency key hidden inside the fob body — a small catch releases it — and it opens the driver's door when the fob has no power to do it wirelessly. For starting the car, Infiniti's push-button system can usually still read a flat fob at very close range: hold the fob against or immediately beside the start button and press. Your owner's manual shows the exact spot for your model, because it differs. Both of those are ways home, not repairs. A fob that only works pressed against the button needs a new battery, which is a cheap fix you can often do yourself. If a fresh battery changes nothing, the fob itself or its pairing is the problem, and that is what we come out for.
Does it matter whether my Infiniti is a G37 or a Q60?
It matters for identifying the car, not for whether we can key it. Infiniti renamed almost the whole range at one point — G sedans and coupes became Q50 and Q60, the FX became the QX70, the M became the Q70, the EX became the QX50 and the JX became the QX60 — so two cars that are mechanically close can wear completely different names. What actually changes the job is the key hardware: a chipped blade key that turns in an ignition, or a proximity fob with a start button. If you are not sure which name is on your car, read us what is on the back of it, or tell us which you do when you drive it — turn a key, or press a button. That is the answer we actually need.
My Infiniti cranks and dies, with a light flashing on the dash. Is that the key?
That pattern usually is the key, and it is a useful thing to notice before you call anyone, because it decides who you should be calling. An engine that turns over and then cuts out within a second or two, with a small key-shaped or security light blinking rather than glowing steadily, is the immobilizer refusing the key. A blade with no recognised chip in it does exactly this, which is why a hardware-store copy opens the doors and never starts the car. Three things cause it in practice: a flat or failing fob battery, a key that lost its programming or was never properly paired to this vehicle, or a fault in the car's own receiver. If you have a second key, try it — if the spare starts the car, the first key is the problem, and you have just saved yourself a diagnostic. If nothing happens at all when you try to start, no cranking and no lights, that is a battery or electrical problem rather than a key one.
