Can a locksmith make a Jeep key, or is it a dealer job?
A locksmith handles most Jeeps. The immobilizer is Chrysler's Sentry Key system, known by the module names SKIM and later SKREEM, and it is shared across Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler and Ram — so the approach is the same whether you drive a Wrangler or a Grand Cherokee. Programming generally depends on a PIN tied to the vehicle, which a licensed locksmith obtains through proper channels once ownership is proven. Jeep's key hardware has changed shape several times: chipped blade keys, the plastic fobik that plugs into the dash on some 2007 to 2015 models, and proximity fobs on later push-button-start trims. Tell us the year and model and which of those you have. Wrangler and Grand Cherokee are the two we see most in Charlotte, and between them they cover the whole range of Chrysler key hardware, from plain chipped blades to proximity fobs.

The fobik years
A stretch of Chrysler-group vehicles roughly between 2007 and 2015 used a fobik — a chunky plastic remote that slots into a receptacle on the dash rather than turning like a key. They are distinctive, they are not interchangeable with ordinary keys, and the emergency blade hidden inside one is easy to forget you have. If yours has stopped working, tell us it is a fobik when you call, because the blank and the equipment are specific to it and a technician arriving with ordinary key stock helps nobody.
Wrangler, Grand Cherokee and lost keys
With no working key at all, the replacement is generated from the vehicle and taught to the Sentry Key module, which takes longer than adding a spare. Wranglers bring one extra consideration: soft tops and removable doors mean a Jeep can be physically open while the ignition is still locked, and people sometimes assume that makes the key job easier. It does not change the programming at all. Ownership is verified before anything is programmed, and the documents can be inside the vehicle.
Jeep Key Questions
What is a Sentry Key and why does my Jeep need a PIN?
Sentry Key is Chrysler's immobilizer, fitted across Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler and Ram since the late 1990s and handled by a module usually called SKIM or, on later vehicles, SKREEM. It checks a transponder in your key every time you start the engine. Adding a key to that module generally requires a PIN tied to your specific vehicle — a deliberate barrier, so that not just anyone can teach a new key to your Jeep. A licensed locksmith can obtain that PIN through proper channels, and the gate is proof of ownership: photo ID plus the registration, title or an insurance card. That check is the part of the system that actually protects you. If the PIN cannot be obtained for your specific vehicle for any reason, we will tell you before dispatching rather than after, and you will not be charged for the conversation.
My Jeep key is a plastic fob that plugs into the dash. Can you replace it?
Yes. That is a fobik, used across a stretch of Chrysler-group vehicles roughly from 2007 to 2015, and it is a specific part rather than a variation on an ordinary key. It slots into a receptacle on the dash instead of turning in a cylinder, and it holds a small emergency blade inside the body that many owners never notice until they need it. Because the blank and the programming equipment are particular to the fobik, mention it when you call — otherwise a technician may arrive carrying the wrong stock entirely. Have the year and model ready too, since the fobik itself changed across that period. Also check whether the emergency blade is still inside yours. It slides out of the fobik body and it is the part people lose without realising, which matters the day the fobik battery dies.
Can you make a Jeep key with the doors already off?
Yes, and it makes no difference to the work. A Wrangler with the doors removed or the top down is physically open, but the immobilizer does not care — the engine still will not start without a key the Sentry Key module recognises, so the programming job is exactly the same as on a sealed vehicle. What an open Jeep does change is the ownership check, and not in your favour: anyone can stand next to an open Wrangler. We still verify photo ID against the registration, title or an insurance card before programming a key to it, which is the same protection you would want if the Jeep were yours and someone else were standing there. If the doors and top are off, it is also worth having somewhere to sit out of the sun while the programming runs, because some model years enforce a wait that nobody can shorten.
